At Farmers State Bank, we couldn’t be more proud to share the inspiring journey of Taylor Shanks, our Customer Service Representative at the Harrisburg branch, who was recently nominated as a finalist for the Rising Star in Banking award! Fresh from a weeklong conference in Atlanta, Taylor joined us on the Isn’t That Rich podcast to dive into her experience and the special moments along the way.

From Serving Pizza to Serving Customers

Taylor’s story started before her banking days when she worked as a server at Mackie's Pizza in Harrisburg. Over her 10 years there, Taylor connected with our bank team members who frequented the restaurant. She recalls asking repeatedly, “When can I get a job there?” Her persistence paid off, and in her early 20s, she joined Farmers State Bank as a part-time teller. That decision led to a career she’s come to love deeply, one filled with daily customer interactions and opportunities to wear many hats—from “therapist” to “banker” to “problem-solver.”

Rising Star Nomination: A Surprise with a Red Carpet Moment

When Taylor received the email that she was nominated for the Rising Star in Banking, it came as a complete surprise! The support she received from her colleagues, including CEO, Charles Holland and  President of Retail Banking, Christine Hankins, made the nomination even sweeter. Standing on a national stage as one of only three finalists, Taylor mingled with banking executives from across the country, including a memorable encounter with a CEO who called her the “legendary Taylor!” The conference was capped off with a red carpet and champagne—a well-deserved celebration for Taylor’s dedication.

Building a Bank on Relationships, Not Transactions

Taylor credits her success to her approach to customer relationships. She isn’t just handling transactions; she’s building bonds. From helping customers set goals and supporting them in times of need to cheering them on during the good moments, Taylor has redefined what it means to be a banker. “We’re not just here for transactions,” she explains. “We know our customers’ families and their stories. We truly care.”

In her six and a half years in banking, Taylor has completed multiple training programs, including the Accredited Banking course and a Trusted Advisor certification. These courses have sharpened her skills to guide customers in a way that’s realistic, helpful, and compassionate. Being a “trusted advisor,” she says, means that customers feel safe coming to her with financial challenges, knowing she’s committed to helping them succeed.

A Shoutout to Her Mentors

Taylor couldn’t talk about her journey without giving credit to her mentors. Robbie Nichols, owner of Mackie's Pizza, shaped her early work ethic; Leslie Leverett helped her conquer challenges like counting money quickly; and, of course, Christine Hankins mentored her every step of the way, building her confidence and helping her grow.

What’s Next for Taylor?

Taylor isn’t slowing down. She’s currently tackling her second year at Banker School, which includes a bank simulation project that challenges her to turn around a “failing” bank. For Taylor, the future is bright as she continues to serve customers and build meaningful relationships on the deposit side of banking.

A Social Media Sensation

When Farmers State Bank shared the news of Taylor’s nomination on social media, the response was overwhelming. With over 300 comments, countless shares, and heartwarming words from customers, friends, and community members, Taylor says this outpouring of support meant even more than the nomination itself.

Taylor Shanks truly exemplifies the best of Farmers State Bank. Her journey is a testament to how hard work, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to people can make a difference. As Taylor puts it, she’s here “for the long haul,” and we couldn’t be luckier to have her.
